What is Osteoporosis?
Patients with osteoporosis often lack symptoms. Sometimes considered a “silent disease,” it can regularly go untreated until your bones become extremely weak, typically resulting in a bone fracture, stooped or hunch-backed posture, and, a loss of height. There are, however, certain risk factors to be mindful of.
Indeed, while limiting alcohol, avoiding tobacco, and maintaining an active lifestyle are means to keep osteoporosis in check, genetic factors also play a key role. Those most susceptible to osteoporosis are women with a family history, of Asian or Caucasian descent, in menopause and/or have a smaller body frame.
If you are at a higher risk, it is important to see a specialist who can measure your bone density to ensure optimal health and provide treatment, if necessary.
