Osteoporosis, Vitamin D Deficiency & Nutrition

What is Osteoporosis?

Patients with osteoporosis often lack symptoms. Sometimes considered a “silent disease,” it can regularly go untreated until your bones become extremely weak, typically resulting in a bone fracture, stooped or hunch-backed posture, and, a loss of height. There are, however, certain risk factors to be mindful of.

Indeed, while limiting alcohol, avoiding tobacco, and maintaining an active lifestyle are means to keep osteoporosis in check, genetic factors also play a key role. Those most susceptible to osteoporosis are women with a family history, of Asian or Caucasian descent, in menopause and/or have a smaller body frame.

If you are at a higher risk, it is important to see a specialist who can measure your bone density to ensure optimal health and provide treatment, if necessary.

Could you have a vitamin D deficiency?

An estimated one billion people worldwide are living with a vitamin D deficiency, many completely unaware. Symptoms can be subtle, so it is important to pay attention to your body and lifestyle. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call us today! We can perform blood testing to ensure you have the correct levels of vitamin D in your body and, if necessary, provide treatment to restore your levels to normal.

Common concerns for patients with a vitamin D deficiency:

  • Why do I have constant muscle pain and cramps?
  • Why are my joints so sore?
  • Why am I always tired?
  • Do I have depression? Why am I sad all the time?
  • Why will my sinus pressure not go away?
  • Why am I experiencing heart palpitations?
  • Am I diabetic? Could my diabetes be worsening?
  • Why am I losing my hair?
  • Why is my scalp sweating?
  • Why do my cuts and bruises take so long to heal?

Having a vitamin D deficiency can cause serious health issues and osteoporosis is one of them. Our bodies naturally make vitamin D from sun exposure. However, when not exposed to enough daily sunlight, whether it be due to seasonal changes, or, simply, because of an indoor lifestyle, the chances of developing this deficiency increases because our body’s ability to create Vitamiin D decreases.
