Have you experienced Diabetes symptoms?

Because diabetes symptoms are the result of elevated sugar levels in your bloodstream, symptoms can vary depending on the level of sugar elevation. Your symptoms will also differ based on the type of diabetes you have. While the symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are largely similar, type 1 symptoms tend to be more aggressive and develop quickly, while the symptoms of type 2 diabetes often appear gradually, meaning that some patients may not experience any symptoms at first. Unfortunately, this can cause the disease to go untreated for longer periods of time.

Common concerns for patients with Diabetes Type 1

  • Why do I feel extremely thirsty all of a sudden?
  • Why does my vision get blurry?
  • Why do I have to urinate so often?
  • I am eating normally, maybe even more frequently, so why am I suddenly losing weight?
  • Why am I constantly hungry when I never used to be?
  • Why am I more tired now than ever before?
  • Why do I feel weak and lethargic?
  • Why do I feel irritated for no reason?
  • What is causing me to have mood swings?

Common concerns for patients with Diabetes Type 2

  • Why am I always so thirsty?
  • Why is my vision getting more blurry over time?
  • Why do I have to urinate so often?
  • Why have I lost weight over the past few months when my diet & lifestyle have not changed?
  • Why am I starting to feel hungry all the time?
  • Why am I always tired?
  • Why am I getting sores that are not healing?
  • Why do I keep getting infections?
  • What causes darkened skin around my armpits and neck?

What is Diabetes Type 1?

Also called “insulin-dependent diabetes,” type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. With type 1 diabetes, your body produces antibodies that damage the pancreas, rendering it unable to produce insulin. Because insulin is the hormone required to turn glucose (or sugars) into energy, patients with type 1 diabetes have to learn how to manage their blood sugar levels.

Treatment typically involves supplementing the body’s insulin with injections or a pump, following
a carefully-planned diet, and maintaining a lifestyle that keeps this insulin deficiency in mind.
Most people will experience the onset of diabetes as a child or adolescent, but it can happen into adulthood as well. While the necessary lifestyle changes are significant, many people are able to manage diabetes 1 and continue to live long, active lives.

What is Diabetes Type 2?

With type 2 diabetes, your body either resists insulin and/or stops producing enough insulin to maintain healthy levels. There can be multiple causes for this, and for most patients, it is usually a ‘multifactorial problem. While there is no cure, there are multiple ways of managing the effects of this disease.
