Thyroid Disorders: Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, & Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid disorders are a common condition, affecting over one in eight women and 12% of the total US population. There are a variety of reasons you could be experiencing problems with your thyroid gland in your neck, but it is important to seek treatment as soon as you realize something is wrong. Great advances have been made in thyroid care, meaning most chronic conditions can be well-managed, and thyroid cancers typically respond well to treatment.

Have you experienced Thyroid Disorder symptoms?

Patients suffering from thyroid disorders often do not immediately know what is wrong. Unfortunately, this can cause patients to leave disorders undiagnosed for longer than necessary. The hormones produced by your thyroid control vital body functions, so it is important to keep an eye out for common symptoms and talk to a health care professional at the first signs of a problem. Delaying medical intervention could worsen symptoms and reduce your treatment options.

Common concerns for patients with Hyperthyroidism:

  • Why do I have trouble falling or staying asleep?
  • Why do I sweat so much? I always feel warm regardless of the actual temperature.
  • I feel like my skin is thinning! Why do I scrape & bruise so easily?
  • I am eating normally, maybe even more frequently, so why am I losing weight?
  • What is causing trembling in my hands & fingers?
  • Why am I experiencing heart palpitations?
  • Why is my hair brittle & breaking off?
  • Why do I feel nervous, anxious, & irritable for no reason?
  • Why are my periods so abnormal?
  • Why am I always hungry?

Common concerns for patients with Hypothyroidism:

  • Why am I so tired all the time?
  • Why do I always feel cold?
  • I moisturize constantly! Why is my skin still so dry?
  • My diet has not changed. Why do I keep gaining weight?
  • Why do I always feel sore, stiff, & achy?
  • Why do I have constant joint pain?
  • Why is my hair thinning and even falling out sometimes?
  • Why do I keep feeling depressed?
  • What is causing my irregular periods?
  • Why am I so forgetful? I feel like my memory is getting worse.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland in your neck is underactive, or unable to produce enough thyroid hormone. There are a number of reasons why this can occur, the most common being Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease.

With the exception of postpartum and viral thyroiditis, most patients with hypothyroidism will need life-long treatment to balance their body’s hormone levels. In nearly every patient, however, the right dose of synthetic hormones will keep their hypothyroidism completely under control.

What is Hyperthyroidism?

Simply put, hyperthyroidism occurs when your body produces too much thyroid hormone. Most commonly, hyperthyroidism is caused by Graves’ disease, a condition characterized by the thyroid gland’s overproduction of thyroid hormone.

However, some patients experience the growth of toxic nodules on the thyroid, increasing the production of this hormone. A temporary condition, called thyroiditis, stems from a compromised immune system or viral infection and produces similar symptoms.

What is Thyroid Cancer?

While rare, it is important to pay close attention to the symptoms of thyroid cancer. It can typically be cured with proper treatment, but symptoms are very subtle and often go undetected. If you notice any of the following symptoms, give us a call immediately.
